Visiting Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG) members Susan McCue, Michael Meehan and Victor Ashe have met with Burmese democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi at her home in Burma. Also present during the meeting was Radio Free Asia (RFA) president Libby Liu. According to reports, Aung San Suu Kyi was very enthusiastic about RFA being able to work more freely in Burma/Myanmar.
During a visit to Washington in September, the Nobel Peace Prize winner praised BBG broadcasters for providing news and information to the Burmese people despite strict government control over the media. And she called for a continued strong U.S. international media presence in Burma. At that time, she said, “VOA world news is very useful for me especially, and I like the media roundup, Burma in the News.” She also said during her September visit to Washington, “This is the time we need all the help possible to make sure that our country keeps on the right path. This is another way of saying RFA is needed more than ever for us in Burma and for other people in other places, which are not yet free.”
