Senator James L. Buckley in the US Congress BioguideThe Committee for U.S. International Broadcasting (CUSIB) is proud to join the drive to honor former U.S. Senator from the state of New York James L. Buckley who from 1982 until 1985 was president of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, Inc. (RFE/RL). CUSIB Advisory Board member Herb Stupp has proposed that the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge be renamed for the former Senator. It was Buckley’s 1972 legislation that created the Gateway National Recreation Area and seashore, including the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge.
On June 12th, Congressman Bob Turner held a news conference at the Wildlife Refuge, announcing his legislation to name the visitor center for James L. Buckley.
CUSIB urges all supporters of U.S. international broadcasting to read Mr. Stupp’s letter and to sign the petition.

Open Letter from the Committee for U.S. International Broadcasting (CUSIB) Advisory Board member Herb Stupp

You can help move “our cause” along by signing a petition to  US Senator, Kirsten Gillibrand, urging her to join Congressman Turner in sponsoring legislation to name the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center for Jim Buckley.
The petition linked here asks Senator Kirsten Gillibrand to carry this effort in the Senate. Ms. Gillibrand occupies the seat held by Senator Buckley from 1971-1977.
As you may know, nothing in New York State has yet been named for Senator Buckley — who went on to serve as an Undersecretary of State in the Reagan Administration, President of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, and as an long-time Federal Appellate Court Justice. At 89, Jim Buckley is the only living American to have held such high office in all three branches of the Federal government.
Naming this center would be an appropriate honor for Senator Buckley and we are hoping Senator Gillibrand will agree to join Congressman Turner in helping make this happen.
Your help would be enormously appreciated in moving this petition to your committee members and friends. We are hoping to have at least 2,500 signatures when we present it to Ms. Gillibrand.
Thank you for your help in this cause!
Herb Stupp
